China to ease the 20 film quota in Shanghai

This is quite interesting… For a long time now, China has allowed the release of only 20 foreign films a year. But apparently now they’re planning on easing the restrictions in Shanghai. The article talks about how China hopes the move might help its own film industry, facilitating the export of Chinese films. My slightly sarcastic guess is that they’re looking at how well the free market model has worked for India’s film industry with Slumdog and all. And yes, the reason Hollywood has started eyeing India much more keenly than China has a lot to do with the free market model :]
