Superhero films do worse business outside of North America
Here’s my random film fact of the day…
There are differences between how well films do in the box office in different parts of the world. Some of these differences are due to how the films are distributed and/or promoted, but when we’re talking about Hollywood, which has the means to do the distribution and promotion of its films on a large scale in most of the developed world, the differences carry some information about culture I think.
Apparently, when it comes to Superhero movies, they usually do much worse business outside of North America. To give you an idea, usually when I look at box office numbers for successful Hollywood films, they earn about one third of their revenue domestically and the rest overseas. But the numbers for The Dark Knight, which was a very successful film everywhere it was released, are $533.3 million domestically vs. $468.5 million overseas. In fact, apparently the only superhero films in recent times that seem to do as well outside of North America as they do domestically are the Spiderman movies.
Traditionally, the most superhero movie resistant market is Germany.
Interesting, huh?
