Ladies and Gentlemen, Bollywood is going nude *grin*

{FILM SPOTTING}

New York (India, 2009)

Polish Distributor: I have no idea if there will be one or not
Release Date (worldwide): sometime early in 2009
Director: Kabir Khan
Cast: John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Irfan Khan
Production House: Yash Raj Films
Plot: (from nowrunning.com)

“New York” is a contemporary story of friendship set against the larger than life backdrop of a city often described as the centre of the world. For most of us, larger events in the world are just headlines in the newspapers but these events can change our lives… forever. “New York” is one such story of 3 young friends whose beautiful lives are turned upside down by larger events beyond their control.

NOTE: I’m pretty sure the larger events are the USA’s war on terror.

What makes it exciting?
Some time ago I linked to one of the Dostana promotional interviews with John Abraham and in it he said *grin*:

Would you show it all if a role required it?
Yes, definitely. Why not? In fact, I have always chosen films and roles that have asked me to do something different. I am extremely comfortable getting into the skin of my character and bringing it alive on screen. However, it doesn’t have to be perverse. Also different characters demand you to adapt to what the script demands. Maybe you are shown nude in a torture scene, it doesn’t necessary have to be sexual.

He was really sly with that answer because at the time of doing the interview he must have already known he was going to do a nude scene (and probably had already shot it) lol
It’s not as if nobody in India has ever done a nude scene before, but AFAIK this is the first time an established Bollywood star is going to appear naked on screen - and in a big studio film at that. I’m pretty excited about what the reactions to this are going to be like once the film releases.
The scene in question is (like John so beautifully points out in that Dostana interview ;-P) a torture scene, so I doubt it’s particularly titillating or anything. Some clips which appear to be from that scene (but in which John isn’t fully exposed) seem to be on the trailer.
Nudity aside, I actually had this film on my “sounds interesting list” even before I learnt about the exposure. I’m pretty curious about how Bollywood will take on the subject of torture and detainment in the USA’s war on terror. But I’m sceptical at the same time… I have a hunch that I’ll have similar feelings about it as I did with Kabul Express (both are Kabir Khan films). I think that like with that film they might not quite find the right style for it, but we’ll see :)
